Objective: To design safer and healthier surfactants using molecular design and the principles of toxicity and environmental mechanism of action to minimize the intrinsic toxicity/ecotoxicity of the product while maintaining its efficacy and function.
Description of research activity: Due to the ever more strict environmental legislation, the chemical industry, in general, should “design, manufacture and use the environmentally benign chemical products and processes that prevent pollution, produce less hazardous waste and reduce environmental and human health risks”. This would be attained by adopting processes and technologies focussed to a more sustainable development. To this end the activities undertaken by the biocompatible surfactants group are addressed to: 1) research and development of environmentally friendly surfactants, 2) fate and effects of surfactants and ionic liquids in the aquatic environment 3) surfactant self assembly, and 4) revalorization of residues.
Expertise: Fundamental and applied chemical investigation of novel environmentally friendly surfactants (products and processes) from natural renewable sources (proteins, polysaccharides, amino acids and natural oil derivatives), as alternatives to conventional surfactants to be applied in cosmetic, textile, dermopharmaceutical, and food industrial preparations and also in the field of Bio-Nano-Materials, Biomedicine and Biotechnology as specialty surfactants. We have a solid background on both the sustainable chemistry synthesis of biobased surfactants as well as the study of their characterization properties in order to create novel multifunctional materials.
Main activities:
Biological properties: Antimicrobial properties, Ecotoxicity, Biodegradability, Cell toxicity

Main activities:
- Chemo-enzymatic synthesis of biobased surfactants at multigrame scale
- Use of renewable raw materials for the synthesis of surfactants: proteins, peptides, amino acids, polysaccharides and triglycerides.
- Employ of natural and more clean processes using biocatalyst based chemical transformations (enzymes) for efficiency and selectivity.
- Use of safer solvents (water systems (micellar catalysts), solvent-free processes, concentrated emulsions).
- In vitro study of cellular action mechanisms.
- Novel functionality as bio-nano materials: Antimicrobial coatings for biomedical materials, drug carriers, transfection, templates for nanomaterials
- Characterization. Study of self assembly systems with special implications in biological processes. Determination of the structures developed by surfactants self assembly in both static and dynamic systems. These structures comprise features with dimensions ranging from the nanometer to the micrometer. Special emphasis is made in the study of lipid structures and membranes by NMR and Langmuir balance.
